Dreams

The skilful interpreter of dreams is he who has the faculty of observing resemblances’

Aristotle

Many people think that ‘Dreams’ and ‘Dreaming’ are purely symbolic – ie the dream itself can be interpreted simply by the ‘symbol’ in it – ie horses or teeth or flying.  This is not correct.  And dreams are not solely about what has happened to us, they can help us solve problems too.

There are in fact several elements involved in interpreting your dreams and only one of them is ‘symbols’.  There’s also a classification of dreams to understand (more below); what the dream language is saying; what colour is dominant in the dream; as well as dream settings; dreams in literal and dream stories.

Classification of Dreams has two elements to it: (1) is the Function / Purpose of the dream and (2) the Content / Theme of the dream.  Examples of each are:

(1)   Function / Purpose can be:

a)     wish fulfilment

b)     problem solving

c)      creative

d)     compensatory

e)     physiological

f)        factual

g)     lucid

h)      recurring

i)        prophetic/clairvoyant

j)        past life memory

(2)   Content / Theme can be:

a.      affluence

b.      travel

c.      being chased

d.      being trapped

e.      frustration

f.        falling

g.      sex

h.      aggression

i.        being naked

So a professional ‘Step by Step Dream Interpretation’ would be looking at these areas as well as taking into account the classification of the dream:

Step 1 Background setting/dominant mental state

Step 2 Recognisable trigger/insignificant dream

Step 3 Coloured dream/dominant colour

Step 4 Literal meaning

Step 5 Story/obvious plot/obvious theme

Step 6 Message dream

Step 7 Prophetic dream

Step 8 Dominant symbolism/any which stand out

However, when we dream we can either dream about things that have happened to us already – with our body and brain sorting out our experiences for us before they go into the subconscious storage locker , or we can seek to focus on the future, or we can set our brain the task of working out a problem for us.

So dreams can be a very useful tool to know and interpret – when done correctly.
